This article at the Harvard Business Review is really good and full of solid advice.  Creatives tend to have short attention spans and become bored with early success.  Frequently they never master their craft, that or they hate everything they do because they can’t match what they imagine or feel.  There are exceptions; the great graphic designer John Van Hamersveld has forgotten more styles than most people will ever develop.  People have supported themselves on just one style they  stole borrowed from him. Of course, he is not as well known as say a Warhol and I would guess neither has he earned as much but Van Hamersveld is a true artist.
