Formatting Text Messages in Fiction

I stumbled on this recommendation which is terrible.  No one should use underlining for anything in typography.  A designer friend explained that the underline is a holdover from the days of manual typewriters where you simply can’t change fonts.  It no longer makes sense to use  underlining.

In keeping with that recommendation if one were putting text messages into a story or novel they could simply use a different type face, for example, courier when using Book Antiqua or using Helvetica when using Times New Roman.

Update:  The irony of this post is that the WordPress theme I’m using uses underlining for html links.   It’s time to change it heh.

Update 2:  Changed theme to one that doesn’t use underlining 🙂
