The Inevitable Conclusion

Chavez came to power an ardent socialist, a firm believer in “social justice”.  At the time of his death his family were billionaires and the economy in a complete shambles.  The country is on the road to Zimbabwe with the most recent actions.  The mind of the nazi, the socialist, the communist, the progressive, the left liberal etc is in opposition to reality.  Their thinking is magical and people are judged on their intentions not their results.  The results focus of the West lead to the highest expression of human civilization ever.  But for whatever bizarre, strange, pathological reasons some minds reject it and blame it for all the ills in the world.  As if poverty was a by product of Western Civilization and not the default state of man.  Venezuela is returning to this default state while those leaders who destroy freedom and the economy discover a new enemy to blame it on never taking responsibility for their own actions.

The prolific Mish Shedlock has a nice timeline of the demise of Venezuela here.

Smokey, the Commando

The militarization of the local police and every nitwit bureaucracy is going to lead to more and more “accidents.”  When you stop being a civil servant and perceive yourself as civil enforcer, violence will surely follow.  Angelo Codevilla in a recent article notes the following:

Modern militarized government stems from the Progressive idea that society must mobilize as for war to achieve “the greater good.” Hence we have “wars” on everything from hunger and drugs and ignorance and global warming. Reality follows rhetoric. Since the health of “the environment” is a matter of life and death, the Environmental Protection Agency must deal with “enemies of the planet” with armored cars, machine guns, and home invasions. Apparently, even the Department of Education has SWAT teams.

How much longer before the refuse collection company mobilizes against those who fail to properly sort their recyclables?  Don’t laugh, we have moved fully in the direction of the absurd and a violent absurdity it is.  The author points out that not all enemies of the state are created equal.

The focus on “Homeland Security” has only added “terrorism” to our ruling class’ excuses for “going after” conservative Americans. And so, the Department of Homeland Security uses its intelligence “fusion centers” to compile ominously worded dossiers against such groups as “pro-lifers” and such “anti government activists” as “homeschoolers” and “gun owners.” The FBI infiltrates the Tea Parties as it once did the Communist Party. DHS conducts its “practice runs” against mockups of these groups. The IRS audits conservative groups.

Those who love freedom are despised by those who would rule.  It’s always been true.  It always will be.  Thomas Paine would be sitting in Gitmo today along with Adams, and Jefferson.

Life in a Soft Tyranny

This is how it looks:

The United States has 5 percent of the world’s people, 25 percent of its incarcerated people, and half of its trained lawyers (who now take about 10 percent of the GDP); the legal system is an embarrassment, and the criminal-justice system is a disgrace, in which prosecutors win 99.5 percent of their cases, 97 percent of them without a trial. The legislators of the country are ultimately responsible for this corruption of what the Constitution and Bill of Rights set up as a just and merciful Society of Laws. The terminal cancer of legal paralysis spreads every week of every year. Unctuous platitudes from the era when Norman Rockwell painted the country, our grandmothers set out the Corn Flakes and the apple pie, and Hollywood was pro-American won’t cut it now, even if the United States even back then was a much more complicated country than it thought it was.

You find stories like these regularly where the bureaucrats are too lazy to exercise any judgment whatsoever driving people into despair and death. The evil can be libertines or law and order absolutists.  What they never are is loving and judicious.

A week after he was arrested for running naked across the Sparkman High School football field during a September 27 game in a streaking gag, and just one day after school officials threatened criminal charges against him that could have resulted in an adult prosecution and conviction requiring lifelong registration as a sex offender, 15-year-old Christian Adamek from Huntsville, Alabama, hanged himself. He died from his injuries two days later.

Update:  Read this story, incredible.

Enemies of the Common Man

We now have in charge the worst corporate leadership in the history of the United States as Byron York reports:

Companies lay off thousands, then demand immigration reform for new labor

They are by any measure simply a reflection of the rapid decline in Western civilization.  What this article shows is that to ascend to the highest levels of a multi-national only requires political acumen superior to your equals at any given level.  It does not require an ability to reason ethically, or act morally from first principles.  Consider this one more data point supporting the observation that the bigger an institution gets the more corrupt it becomes.

Is this not like the child who kills his parents and then solicits sympathy for being an orphan?  I am glad they put their name on the letter.  I will avoid doing additional business with these companies and where possible switch. Realize that they are complaining about a need to increase “global competitiveness” at time when corporate profits and executive compensation are at historic highs.  Now I am not some naïf.  Businesses are not public charities; their primary mission is to return a profit to their shareholders according to the case won by the Dodge brothers.  I understand. However, it is not the only  view of the corporate mission.  I also know in a free market, behaviour like this would lead to economic consequences and eventual elimination by innovators.  In the US today with all the cooperation between the state and corporations the chance of that happening is quite low.

Do we need immigration reform in the US?  Indeed we do but not the bill before Congress which does nothing but screw the average American for the benefit of big corporations while rewarding people who knowingly entered the country illegally.

Stop Killing Yourself

If you work for a major corporation and you working extended hours, which has been called “volunteer time”  this article at CNN should convince you, you’re working too hard and in vain.  It also explains rising inequality.  It’s the primary reason I left corporate America five years ago.  I just wasn’t seeing the reward for the long hours I worked.  A minimal bonus for 3:30 AM global conference calls, fourteen hour days and extended international travel.  I could have been short sighted but I am happier spending time with family and I make a little more.  Corporations used to talk about “quality of life’ for employees back in the ’80s (hypocritically really);  I suppose the goal today is “quality, no life.”  How do you sleep at night knowing you are stealing from your employees the most limited commodity on the earth, time.  Perhaps, one should engage in a work slow down aka, working a regular day.

Companies are on a tear in terms of productivity and profits, but they aren’t sharing much of the gains with their workers.
